Why are my periods so irregular?

Why are my periods so irregular?

Honestly, between my friends and me, we could write a whole book on our mini soap operas when it comes to our periods!
Take PCOS, for instance. For many women, it can be an emotional journey filled with unexpected twists and turns - like a monthly game of roulette. One month, your period shows up like an overzealous party guest, while the next, it’s ghosting you like an ex. It’s frustrating and can sometimes leave us feeling isolated. But remember, you’re not alone! So many women are navigating similar experiences, and together, we support one another through the ups and downs.
And there are our stressful environments. You know that moment when you’re juggling a million things, and your period decides to pop up right in the middle of it all? It’s almost like our bodies are saying, “Oh, you’re busy? Let’s throw in a surprise visitor!” How many times have we laughed and said, “Guess what’s late again? My period clearly doesn’t do punctual!” It’s all in good fun, but it also shows how our bodies can be unpredictable - and that’s perfectly okay. We’re resilient, and this is just one of the many ways our bodies remind us of our uniqueness!
For those of us who love breaking a sweat at the gym, there’s another twist in this saga. Ever notice how, when you’re hitting those weights hard, especially on an empty stomach, your period goes, “Yeah, I’m not showing up this month”? Turns out, when we push ourselves too hard, our hormones litterally stop sending the "period signal." It’s like our bodies are raising a white flag, saying, “Let’s take a break!” A gentle reminder to honour our bodies and find balance, and that’s empowering.
And then there's the reboot experience when you come off birth control. After years of having a dependable cycle, you suddenly find yourself wondering, “Did it go on its own little vacation?!” It’s like opening a box of chocolates—some are sweet, and some are, well, less than desirable. Adjusting to this new reality can feel like navigating a road trip without a map—who knows where you’ll end up? But if we're honest about it: our managing of the unpredictability really is a testament to our strength as women; we adapt and rise to the occasion!
For those of us in our fabulous 40s, perimenopause feels like signing up for a rollercoaster ride without knowing it’s the wildest one in the park. Some months, your period says, “Nope, not today,” while other times, it’s as chaotic as a Saturday morning at the local flea market - everything is everywhere, and you’re just trying to keep up! It’s a game of menstrual bingo, and we’re all players. We might as well celebrate it altogether; they make us who we are - strong, capable, and beautifully unique.
Let’s not forget our new mommies out there. When you’re breastfeeding, it’s totally normal for your period to take a sabbatical for months, only to return with an unpredictable flair. The hormonal rollercoaster during breastfeeding can really throw us for a loop, but we learn to laugh through the madness - how many of us can relate? We embrace it as part of the sisterhood foundation and the incredible adventure of becoming a mother!
For those women with celiac disease, going gluten-free might just be the secret to a more regular cycle. Who knew that skipping bread could help keep your period on schedule? An additional inspiration for living the gluten-free dream!
At the end of the day, it’s clear that irregular periods are a common saga we share. If things start feeling completely out of sorts, though, it’s wise to check in with a doc. After all, better safe than sorry, right? It’s like checking the fridge for snacks before settling in for a movie marathon!
Together and as a community, we’re experiencing the twists and turns of femininity, celebrating our strength and resilience, one beautiful moment at a time.
Let’s lift each other up, celebrate our strength, and fully embrace the beauty of who we are - period!
